Executives from some of Europe’s largest companies are in Sheffield today (Thursday 22 Feb 07) to view the city’s sporting venues where the 2007 UK Corporate Games will be staged this summer.
The directors, from major companies such as Waitrose, Ernst & Young and Vodafone, are calling in at venues including Ponds Forge, the English Institute of Sport, Graves Park and Norton Playing Fields.
David Fletcher, director of Sheffield First for Investment, sees today as another chance to show the best the city has to offer to corporate decision-makers.
He says: “As well as taking our guests to Sheffield’s world class sporting venues where they and their colleagues will be competing this summer, we are ensuring they see the city at its best. We will even demonstrate the benefits of having the Peak District on our doorstep by taking them for lunch in Baslow.”
As well as the national and international companies that will participate in the Games, local business leaders have also pledged to enter teams to compete for the prestigious medals, with leading law firms DLA Piper, Halliwells and Nabarro Nathanson, IT specialist EDS, outsourcing company Liberata and the Doncaster Dome Leisure Trust all sending teams to the Games.
The event, staring on 29th June and running to 1st July, is set to bring up to 6,000 participants to the city and to boost the local economy by more than £2 million over one weekend.
This event has been brought to the city in partnership with Sheffield First for Investment, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield International Venues and the Yorkshire South Destination Management Partnership.
Sports ranging from Badminton and Basketball to Volleyball and Hockey will be held at the many world-class facilities managed by Sheffield International Venues.
Some of the other spectacular events will include Dragon Boat Racing and the Tug of War as well as a parade through the city centre featuring all competitors.
