Published Date: 13 Oct 2009

Sheffield City Council Leader Paul Scriven will kick off Sheffield 2018 Back the Bid Day on Friday 16th October when he referees a 5 aside football bonanza on Devonshire Green at 12 noon.

Representatives from Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday will battle it out in 20 minutes and 18 seconds of football in support of Sheffield’s 2018 World Cup bid. Watch out for some well known faces!

The people of Sheffield are also being asked to be creative and back Sheffield’s bid to be a 2018 World Cup host city through any imaginative means possible. Schools and businesses are pledging their support, having organised all manner of activities such as a ‘wear your football shirt to work / school day’, ‘Dress like a Sports Star Day’, ‘Non-Uniform Days’, ‘Mass Registration Day’ and other sporting activities and competitions.

Paul Scriven commented: “Back the Bid Day offers the people of Sheffield an opportunity to pledge their support for the city’s bid and help Sheffield to be a front runner in this competition - with an added bonus of some top prizes to be won.

http://www.sheffield2018.co.uk/ shows an impressive array of schools, colleges, businesses and individuals who have so far signed up which will clearly demonstrate to FIFA the immense enthusiasm and support that the Sheffield people and businesses have for the World Cup bid and the city.”

“Most importantly, however, Back the Bid Day is about having fun! So please, come down to Devonshire Green in your lunch break; watch the match; wear your favourite football shirt or sports kit; vote for Sheffield and encourage others to do the same!”

All people wishing to be involved are being asked to text Sheffield to 62018 and submit their plans for Back the Bid day to http://www.sheffield2018.co.uk/ followed by photos of their activities to be in with a chance of winning a multitude of prizes including tickets to the next England game at Wembley.

Wayne Coyle, Sheffield’s 2018 bid director added: “The football match represents Sheffield’s unified bid – with involvement from the city’s two professional clubs. All those involved will be encouraging the people of Sheffield to get behind the bid and text Sheffield to 62018. Look out for The England Band who will also be out and about in Sheffield on Back the Bid Day. If you’ve heard them before you will know that they are definitely not to be missed!”

Supporters of the Sheffield bid are being asked to text Sheffield to 62018 or visit http://www.sheffield2018.co.uk/.
