Contact Centres

Contact centre employment in the Sheffield City Region is estimated at 35,000 employees minimum. Physically there are over 50 centres evenly spread throughout the city rather than being concentrated in one geographical area. The sectors they serve include; financial services, legal services, telecommunications, IT, retail, and travel.

The Sheffield market is well established with key skills and players already located and thriving here reporting a buoyant labour market with a plentiful supply of quality candidates.

Companies who have established contact centres in the city have done so because of:

  • the size and quality of the labour force; 1.4 million people of working age with 93,530 people in sales and customer services
  • a reliable student workforce of over 58,000 students in the city at any one time, and 16,000 graduates annually
  • competitive office occupancy costs with a good supply of office accommodation and public transport links
  • highly cost effective salary rates against regional and national averages with one of the lowest labour turnover rates in the UK.

Sheffield has “…relatively low operating costs, less intense competition than its contemporaries and continuing potential to satisfactorily fill contact centre vacancies on any scale compared to most of the other eleven major cities in the country.”

“The city also ranked well across all locations against those responding how satisfied they were… Sheffield has not, so far, maximised the opportunity for contact centre investment but does have the capacity to service that investment.”
