The University of Sheffield is among the top ten in the Russell Group, the association of leading UK research-intensive universities, according to results of the 2008 RAE. The results confirm the University's position as a world-leading university with an international reputation for research excellence across a wide range of disciplines.
Sheffield's quality, breadth and volume of research activity is further demonstrated by the fact that research carried out by 93% of the University's academic staff submitted is internationally recognised and in many cases world-leading. The University is also among one of only ten universities in the country that submitted more than 40 units of assessment, with over 90% of eligible staff included in the RAE.

Sheffield Hallam University is considered one of the leading new universities in the UK. With 16 research centres and institutions, two Yorkshire Forward centres of Industrial Collaboration and several specialised research groups, Hallam possesses an ambitious growth strategy to sustain and develop their programme of research.
Out of Hallam's 15 submissions 12 were judged to undertake world leading research within their quality profile. Meaning each of the University's four faculties were found to have world-leading research.
Sheffield Hallam University was placed sixth for research power compared with all other post-1992 universities. 68 per cent of research activity was rated at international quality or above, while 8 per cent gained the top rating of 4*, classing it as world leading.
