Sheffield’s bid to be a 2018 FIFA World Cup host city hits the big screen this month.
The Showroom Cinema will be asking visitors to get their phones out and text Sheffield to 62018 prior to all the films screened throughout November.
Sheffield, who claim the oldest football club in the world and also the place where the laws of the game were first drawn up, has been designated as a 2018 FIFA World Cup applicant host city, along with 15 other cities, by the Football Association.
Margot Williams, Marketing and Communications Director at Showroom, commented: “The Showroom is Sheffield's independent cinema which brings the world of film to the city as well as hosting international events. We recognise the enormous potential benefits of hosting the World Cup in Sheffield in 2018, both for the city’s businesses and the community alike. We are therefore, keen to support Sheffield’s bid and want to encourage others to do the same."
Wayne Coyle, Director of Sheffield’s 2018 bid, added: “It is fantastic to see such a prestigious venue in Sheffield proactively backing the city’s bid and encouraging others to do the same. If we are successful in our bid, local businesses, such as The Showroom, would suddenly be faced with a wealth of opportunities in the run up to the event and throughout.”
With two excellent stadiums, a football-mad population, a wealth of great hotels and some of the most scenic countryside only minutes away from the city centre, Sheffield is ideally placed to welcome the greatest players in the world and help them compete for the biggest sporting prize in football.
Supporters of the Sheffield bid are being asked to text Sheffield to 62018 or visit www.sheffield2018.co.uk.
