Both of Sheffield’s professional football clubs have officially been presented with approved planning notices today for expansions to both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough stadiums. The new developments will allow both clubs to meet the requirements of FIFA and England 2018 as part of Sheffield’s bid to be a 2018 World Cup Host City.
Councillor Colin Ross, Cabinet Member for Employment, Enterprise and Development, who handed over the planning notices, commented: “This is fantastic news for both our World Cup bid and the regeneration of the city! Sheffield can now confidently present to England 2018 and FIFA two excellent football stadiums which meet the requirements to host World Cup games.
“This news will really give strength to Sheffield’s bid and communicates a clear message that our city really is a forward-thinking place where partners work together to get things done for the clear benefit of the city, our businesses and the community.”
Sheffield United plan to extend the South Stand by 6,670 seats which, coupled with the proposed improvements to The Kop, would increase capacity to 44,500. The South Stand redevelopment will include a second tier of seating, new supporters, corporate and community facilities as well as further conference and banqueting accommodation and a purpose built exhibition hall.
The proposals are a continuation of SUFC’s long term strategy of building a sustainable off field business which has and will continue to act as a catalyst to regeneration of the surrounding areas. The proposed development complements the existing offer, including the four star Copthorne Hotel, Enterprise centre, conference and banqueting spaces providing further jobs in a range of sectors.
Sheffield Wednesday’s revamp will see Hillsborough Stadium transformed with a strong community focus. This includes a new learning zone overlooking the pitch within the West Stand and further education facilities in the North Stand aimed at creating the biggest classroom in the country.
The stadium's capacity will be increased from 39,812 to 44,825 by extending the North Stand, remodelling the Kop and West Stands and filling in corners of the ground with seating. Plans also include an enterprise zone to cater for training and business start-ups, 17 executive boxes and increased car parking. Hillsborough will become a ‘green stadium’ through rainwater harvesting and solar cell technology. Sheffield Wednesday say improving the "matchday experience" for supporters is also central to the redevelopment.
