We create plastic dresses that dissolve on contact with water

Sheffield scientist Professor Tony Ryan has been working with artist and fashion designer Helen Storey to create a collection of beautiful clothes made from a revolutionary polymer that biodegrades on contact with water.  Not very practical if it rains, you might think.

The real point of the collection, however, is to draw attention to the need to address the environmental damage caused by a throwaway society.

Called Wonderland, the project brings together cutting-edge arts and science to create solutions for sustainable living.  Other products include a bottle that disappears when it's no longer needed and a revolutionary water purification pillow, which are every bit as unusual as they sound.

So, while you won't be wearing a Wonderland dress any time soon, Sheffield will be at the heart of the drive for environmentally friendly plastics.
