Language skills

Sheffield dominates in the provision of language services in Yorkshire & the Humber, and universities in the city account for over half of the region's postgraduate language students and about one-fifth of undergraduate language students.

Research has shown that businesses in Sheffield found the provision of language and cultural skills to be good, and two thirds have found it easy to train people with existing language skills in job-related skills.  Sixty-three per cent of companies in Yorkshire and the Humber employ staff with existing language skills and French, German, Spanish and Italian are the most commonly spoken languages.

Sheffield International College opened in 2006 and helps to prepare international students for entry to the University of Sheffield's range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, combining language skills teaching with academic study.
