Sheffield Overview
The Sheffield city region is home to a number of nationally recognized brand contact centres, shared service centres, and business process outsourcers with employment at the sites estimated as being in the region of 38,000. These operations range in size from small centres to larger employers with around 4,000 employees.
If you are looking for a location for your project, take advantage of the commercial benefits of operating from a City Region which has one of the highest rates of economic growth in the UK.
Sheffield offers a highly competitive operating cost base, with occupancy costs up to 40% lower than equivalent London costs, providing you with the opportunity to compete profitably with alternative UK and offshore alternatives.
Contact Centres
Contact centre employment in the Sheffield City Region is estimated at 25,000 employees minimum. Physically they are evenly spread throughout the city rather than being concentrated in one geographical area. The sectors they serve include; financial services, legal services, telecommunications, IT, retail, and travel.
The Sheffield market is well established with key skills and players already located here reporting a buoyant labour market with a plentiful supply of quality candidates.
Companies who have started business centres in the city have done so because of the quality of the labour force and also with what they have found to be a reliable student workforce, with a total of 54,000 students in the city at any one time.
“On the basis of operators’ current requirements, Sheffield tops the ranking of Britain’s principal cities in this year’s survey.”
Sheffield has “…relatively low operating costs, less intense competition than its contemporaries and continuing potential to satisfactorily fill contact centre vacancies on any scale compared to most of the other eleven major cities in the country.”
“The city also ranked well across all locations against those responding how satisfied they were… Sheffield has not, so far, maximised the opportunity for contact centre investment but does have the capacity to service that investment.”

Contact Centre Forum
The Sheffield Contact Centre Forum is a professional forum where like minded contact centre professionals meet every four months. The forum is a vehicle for communication, networking, tackling important issues that surround this industry, and to ensure the true demand for staffing in this key sector is captured.
This enables Creativesheffield to ensure the high quality supply of potential employees is provided through training initiatives, and the demand for employees is fed back to other supply side organisations.
It is also a useful vehicle for contact centres who experience site/department closures or redundancies – those staff who are affected can hopefully be recruited by other member contact centres.
For further details ergarding the Contact Centre Forum please contact Nicola Nicholson HR Business Consultant, +44 (0)114 223 2363.
Contact Sheffield is a web forum which enables contact centre forum members to interact and discuss key topics throughout the year, in addition to the three physical meetings.
