Sheffield has excellent digital connections for anyone needing high or low capacity bandwidth. 

The whole of Sheffield is covered by broadband services, with 100 per cent of local exchanges enabled for high-speed digital services (broadband ADSL) over their existing phone lines. Yorkshire and the Humber as a whole is totally broadband enabled, making it one of the most connected places in the country.

Broadband capability is also available via wireless services, which do not require proximity to enabled exchanges, or dedicated ethernet connections.

  • The IPNet Sheffield project uses pre-WiMAX technology to offer wireless speeds over 10Mbps, for either daily use or as a back up facility. Sheffield is the first place in the UK to be covered by such a network, which provides business users in the central and outlying areas of the city with flexible high capacity coverage.
  • The Wired Workplace is a Sheffield based Local Area Network (LAN) of high-capacity bandwidth offering a range of value added services to local companies.

South Yorkshire Digital Region is a unique project to provide an IP enabled infrastructure across the whole of the county, which is available at competitive rates, via a range of carriers, to all businesses and residents in the area.  The first project of its kind in the UK, 2007 should see the Digital Region really take shape. 

Sheffield is also the site for the Sheffield Digital Campus. This 6.5 acre development in the centre of Sheffield adjacent to Sheffield Hallam University and the Cultural Industries Quarter will provide leading edge IT infrastructure will be supplied to all 350,000 sqft of accommodation.  The first stage of the development, Electric Works, is due for completion in late 2008.

Sheffield is now developing a cluster of companies on the cutting edge of wireless broadband technology which further strengthens its position as one of the most connected cities in the country.
