Transforming the station and its environs into a world-class gateway to the city and South Yorkshire.
A key component of Sheffield's regeneration is the £60m+ project to transform the station and its environs into a world-class gateway to the city and South Yorkshire. The scheme also forms part of the overall plan for the revitalisation of the Sheaf Valley into a key location for Sheffield's creative and digital cluster. The improvements include refurbishment of the station and upgrading of passenger facilities; the radical transformation of the area in front of the station with the creation of a stunning new civic square; realignment of the road network; a more pedestrian-friendly link to the city centre; the reclamation of land to provide commercial development sites on Paternoster Row and Howard Street; and the demolition of Sheaf House and Dyson House to provide high quality commercial floorspace for Phase 3 of the Sheffield Digital Campus project.
Outputs
- 6,509 sq m of new and refurbished commercial space
- 6,323 sq m of public realm improved
- 1.19 ha of land made available for redevelopment.
Progress to Date
The last 18 months have seen excellent progress on this scheme. Work to the station concourse, platforms and canopies was completed at the end of 2005, giving a new lease of life to this impressive listed Victorian building. Its fine quality was recognised when it took top prize at the 2006 National Rail Awards. The relocated taxi rank was completed in May 2006 and passengers now enjoy the benefits of a new Travel Centre and information facilities along with a wider range of high quality retail units.
