Progress to Date
Excellent progress on the Heart of the City project has been maintained year on year. All the major public works are now complete and the private sector development partner, CTP St James Ltd, has assumed the leading implementation role for the delivery of the investment and jobs upon which the public works were predicated.
The stylish, £21 million St Paul's Hotel, designed by Mark Weintraub, opened for business in November 2005 and quickly established itself as Sheffield's premier hotel. With a stunning glazed foyer leading directly into the Winter Garden, the innovative design and the outstanding conference and leisure facilities make it a truly international quality hotel.
Located adjacent to St Paul's Hotel is the first office building, No. 1 St Paul's Place, designed by leading architects Allies and Morrison. Completed in June 2006, it is occupied by global law firm DLA Piper Rudnick with a lively assortment of restaurants and café-bars on the ground floor.
Millennium Square, also designed by Allies and Morrison, was finished in March 2006 and provides a stunning link between the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden. The palette of natural materials matches that of the Peace Gardens and the striking stainless steel water features, by sculptor Colin Rose, add a unique dimension to the space.
Construction of City Lofts' 32- and 9-storey residential towers, providing 322 apartments, has begun. The elegant, Conran-designed buildings will be the tallest in Sheffield and will act as a landmark in the city centre. The adjacent 550-space car park, set to become one of Sheffield's most eye-catching buildings with its unique, highly-faceted aluminium cladding, has started on site and the second office building, No. 2 St Paul's Place has begun. The third and final office block, designed by Stephen Hodder, has received planning permission and work is expected to commence in 2008. The car park will open in autumn 2008 and the apartments in 2009.
